Question by X-MAN: What makes my Scorpion EXO-1000 helmet worth the cost?
I’m a new rider and I was planning on buying a cheap ‘Icon’ helmet for about 0 but I ended up spending a lot more on a Scorpion helmet for about 0, all my friends (only one of which is a rider however he’s new as well) think I’m crazy for spending so much. I feel you get what you pay for and my head is worth every penny however I do wonder what makes a helmet worth more or less? I’m sure the extra built-in visor and good looks isn’t worth that extra 0 so what is? Did I make a good choice or lose out on some extra cash?

no wind noise
lightweight
good internal air circulation

a high quality name brand helmet makes a big difference, AND, if you like it or not you will be judged by other bikers by the brand of motorcycle helmet you wear, you will be much more respected wearing a high quality name brand helmet.

(example) seen a man on a brand new top of the line Victory Motorcycle wearing a cheap HJC helmet, it made him look bad riding a K motorcycle wearing a cheap 0 helmet

personally: to me, the Shoei is the best, but the Scorpion is also a high quality helmet and i don’t know if you know this or not, but these high quality helmets do come in different shapes for different shape heads and i would HIGHLY suggest you match the helmet for the head SHAPE and size.
If you visit their website you will see information about head shape and the proper procedure to measure your head.
a proper fitting helmet makes a BIG difference on being comfortable for that all day long ride.

Bell had an ad some years ago, “if your head is worth $50 buy a $50 helmet”. You did the smart thing. There is a lot of science and testing involved in designing a good helmet.

  • Buster Brown:

You are not getting $200 more protection. When you buy a top-line helmet, it will not protect your head appreciably better than a $100 Snell or DOT rated helmet. In some cases, the cheap helmet may give even better protection.

What you get for the extra money is finish, features and comfort. In fact if the $400 helmet is not a lot more comfortable for you than the $150 helmet, you should buy the cheaper one, as you are getting nothing worthwhile for the extra money.

Anybody who parrots that line “If you have a $50 head…” is just that, an ignorant, unwitting shill for industry marketing hype. They don’t know what they are talking about.

A good helmet depends on the fit and its protection ability. Do you like the helmet? Scorpions offer adequate protection. They personally don’t fit my head that well but they are good helmets and I had an EXO 700 protect me in a crash.

If you have trouble finding a helmet that fits the Scorpion 1000 is the ticket because of the inflatable cheek pads. My only complaint is with the 1000 is the lower vent. It doesn’t seem to allow much air through which is a problem in the rain. I’d probably go with 700 next time because it supposedly flows air better than the 1000 and is $100 cheaper. My other beef with the 1000 is the shield lock. Most helmets have a detent that keeps the shield open just a crack but the 1000 doesn’t. You have flip this tiny lever to lock the shield in place. This great when you’re puttin’ around town but try finding that lever when you get up to speed on the highway. AS to what the difference is its usually comfort. Higher priced lids have removeable liners for cleaning. The impact absorbing material is of a higher quality and can be immersed in water for cleaning where cheaper materials will crumble. And of course fit and finish. It’s true that all helmets will protect you but the better the lid fits the better it will do its job. You get what you pay for. I’d go for an Arai or Shoei if I could afford it. Great helmet but it has its quirks.
